How do I choose the best water heater to meet my needs?

You should choose a water heater based on the number of people in the home and also your "peak" time for which you are using the most water.

I smell gas in the house. What should I do?

If you smell gas in the home, first and foremost, DO NOT use any type of phone, computer, appliance, elevator, or garage door opener. Also, DO NOT touch electrical outlets, switches, or doorbells. DO NOT SMOKE, USE A LIGHTER, MATCH, OR ANY OTHER OPEN FLAME. Secondly, everyone present should leave the premises immediately and be sure to leave ALL doors and windows OPEN. Finally, once everyone involved is safe, be sure to call your local gas company. You may also contact your local fire department.

What would cause a loss of electrical power?

There are many factors which would contribute to a power loss. Some would include the weather such as a rainstorm, an energy shortage, or even a tree or other large object which has fallen into a power line. Call your local electric company to confirm any power outages. If there are no power outages but your power is still out please do not hesitate to Hutchins Plumbing & A/C Inc. at 903-892-9925 or 903-465-3903, or at our Allen location 972-562-6292. How does an air conditioner work?

In reality, an air conditioning system is exactly that, a system where two parts work together to maintain the comfort of your home. The unit that is outside of your home is where the refrigerant is contained and the coil inside your home where the refrigerant is distributed. As air is transported across the coils, the refrigerant removes the heat from the air. Consequently, the air is not only cooled but also dehumidified.

  • Make sure to keep your home weatherized. From caulking windows and doorways to extra insulation, all of which will prevent unneeded drafts of air.
  • During the cold days, make sure your home stays at 70 degrees.
  • Leaving cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks open during the colder days will allow warmer air to get to your pipes.
  • Make sure that pipes located outside are well insulated or covered.
  • Leave your faucets trickling water to prevent freezing.

I have heard the term "SEER". What does it mean?

Your Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or "SEER" refers to exactly how efficient your unit is utilizing electricity. Bottom line, the higher your "SEER" rating is the greater efficiency you will receive from your unit. Before 1992 a typical "SEER" rating would be approximately 6.0. However, during that year, governmental regulations were established for new homes and the minimum "SEER" rating became 10.0 "SEER". To receive the true benefits of a "high efficiency" system, your system must be at a minimum of 13.0 "SEER" and a maximum of 20.0 "SEER".

By reversing it's cycle, an air to air heat pump has the capability to remove the warm air from the outside and bring it inside during the colder months, an air to air heat pump can be extremely cost effective. If I lose power, what should I do?

The benefit of an emergency generator is that the generator acts automatically and simultaneously with the main circuit breaker. When power is lost, the generator automatically senses the loss signals to turn on the generator. Irregardless of whether anyone is home or not, within moments, your home's power will be restored. Once the power of the circuit breaker is restored, the generator also knows to make to switch back to the main power source.

Are tankless water heaters more efficient?
