Electrical Safety Tips

At Hutchins Plumbing & A/C, Inc. our much-valued customers and staff are always our foremost priority. Our electrical service staff has designed the following electrical safety tips to ensure your safety. If you have any questions or can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to call us at one of our phone numbers listed below. For your convenience, you may also request services from this site.

Electrical Panel Electrical Inspections:

Electrical inspections should be inspected on an annual basis. They are not maintenance free. If they go unchecked they can cause service interruption and in extreme cases, fires.

Check for outlets that have loose fitting plugs which can overheat and lead to fire. Replace any missing or broken wall plates. Make sure there are safety covers on all unused outlets that are accessible to children.

Make sure cords are in good condition and they are not frayed or cracked. Make sure they are placed out of traffic areas. Cords should never be nailed or stapled to the wall, baseboard, or to another object. Do not place under carpets or rugs, or rest any furniture on them.

Extension Cords:

Check to see that cords are not overloaded. Additionally, extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis. They are not intended as permanent household wiring. Make sure extension cords have safety closures to help prevent young children from shock hazards and mouth burn injuries.

If an appliance repeatedly blows a fuse, trips a circuit breaker or has given you a shock, it is time to unplug it and have it repaired or replaced.

Additional Electrical Safety Tips:

  • Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every floor outside sleeping areas and in every bedroom, and are in good working order.
  • Look for telltale signs of electrical problems such as dimming of lights, frequent circuit breaker trips or blown fuses.
  • Use light bulbs that are the proper wattage for the fixture. Higher wattage bulbs can degrade the wires in and around the fixture.
  • Unplug unused appliances and stow cords safety out of reach of pets, young children or hazardous situations.
  • Always follow appliance instructions carefully, and do not attempt amateur repairs or upgrades.
Electrical Fire Safety Tips:

1. When an electrical short or spark does happen, it is vital to understand what to do to prevent or put out an electrical fire to keep the damage and devastation from spreading.

2. Call 911 immediately in the event of an electrical injury or fire.

3. Never touch anyone who is being shocked. The shock can spread through body contact.

4. Know where fuse boxes and circuit breakers are located as well as how to properly operate them.

5. Never attempt electrical repairs or rewiring without proper certification and experience.

6. Do not put water on an electrical fire; Use a dry fire extinguisher or baking soda instead.

Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips:

  • Keep trees pruned and away from power lines overhead as well as where the power lines approach the house.
  • When using a ladder, carefully inspect the surrounding area to be sure it is free from power lines.
  • Do not swim or play in water during an electrical storm, even if it is not raining.
  • Do not approach a downed power line to see if it is live. It may give no signs that can be easily observed, but it is just as deadly. Contact the authorities immediately about downed lines.
